Sources

The “bright ship” is adapted from an illumination in the 9th-century Corbie Psalter. (Amiens, Bibliothèque, MS 18, fol. 133) The main border design is adapted from a 12th-century stained-glass window, “Samson and the Doors of Gaza”. (Stuttgart, Würtembergischen Landesmuseum) The 10th-century Exeter Book, also known as the Codex Exoniensis, is an anthology of Anglo Saxon poetry. (Exeter, Cathedral Library MS 3501) One of the riddles which seems appropriate to this design begins thus: I saw a strange creatures, a bright ship of the air beautifully adorned …”. The answer is “the sun”.
