The dog jousting on a rabbit is adapted from an illumination in a 14th-century breviary. (London, British Museum, Yates Thompson MS 8, fol. 294) The posing bunny is adapted from a 13th/14th-century woven altar cloth in Isenhagen Cloister, Lower Saxony. The rabbit with a crossbow and the dead rabbit are adapted from a 14th-century illumination in the Metz Pontifical. (Cambridge, Fitzwilliam Museum, MS 298, fol. 41) The white rabbit is adapted from a painting on a 13th-century German game box. (New York, Metropolitan Museum of Art, 1976.327) The bunny jousting on a man-snail is adapted from an illumination in a 14th-century breviary. The border is adapted from a 7th-century belt buckle from the grave of the “Man from Morken”. (Krefeld, Museum Burg Linn) The alphabet is adapted from a 12th/13th-century brocaded tabletwoven band.

Materials and Techniques

You can use any even weave fabric such as Aida cloth or linen. The threads are DMC floss. Stitching uses whole cross-stitches and backstitching. Note: Use 310 Black for the birds’ legs, the rabbits’ whiskers, and on the flowers. Use 310 Black to outline the spear heads and spear shafts. Use 920 Copper-MD to outline the bird on the rabbit’s shield. Use 975 Golden Brown-DK to outline the fleur-de-lis on the dog’s shield.
