The two soldiers leading the way and the little soldier immediately behind the horse are adapted from a detail incised on whale bone on the early 8th-century Franks Casket. (London, British Museum, MA 1867, 1-20, 1) The warrior on the horse is adapted from a 7th-century stone carving from Hornhausen, Thüringen, Germany. The three tall soldiers bringing up the rear of the procession are adapted from a carving on an 8th-century Pictish gravestone from the Borough of Birsay, Orkney, Scotland. (Edinburgh, National Museum of Antiquities) The border is adapted from an 8th-century elephant-bone relic box from Yemen. (Cologne, St. Gereon) The alphabet is the 6th-8th-century Germanic futhark (runic alphabet).
Materials and Techniques
You can use any even weave fabric such as Aida cloth or linen. The threads are DMC floss. Only whole cross-stitches are used.
