Sources

The alphabet is adapted from an Italian Gothic alphabet in the 16th-century German manuscript, Mira Calligraphiae Monumenta. (Los Angeles, J. Paul Getty Museum) The carnation is adapted from an illumination in the 16th-century French Hours of the Blessed Virgin Mary. (Washington, Library of Congress, Rosenwald Collection) The rabbits are adapted, from left to right: from a 12th-century Syrian ceramic plate (London, Victoria and Albert Museum); from an illumination in the 14th-century French manuscript, the Cloisters Apocalypse (New York, Metropolitan Museum of Art, 68.174, fol. 22v); from an illumination in the 13th/14th-century English manuscript, the Grey-FitzPayn Hours (Cambridge, Fitzwilliam Museum, MS 242, fol. 29r); from a 15th-century Spanish ceramic plate (New York, Hispanic Society of America, E 578).
