The nun is adapted from an illumination in a 13th- century psalter. (New York, Pierpont Morgan Library, MS 756) The monk is adapted from a drawing in the 13th- century Chronica Majora by Matthew Paris. (Cambridge, Corpus Christis College, MS 26) The building is adapted from a drawing of a hospital built by Queen Mathilda in London, also from the Chronica Majora by Matthew Paris. The Gothic Textura alphabet is adapted from a 15th/16th- century German embroidered carpet. (Lüneburg, Lüne Cloister) The border is adapted from a 7th/8th- century Coptic tracery on the front of a gospel book. (New York, Pierpont Morgan Library, M569)

Materials and Techniques

You can use any even weave fabric such as Aida cloth or linen. The threads are DMC floss. Whole cross-stitches are used with a bit of black backstitching forming the mouths on the nun and monk.
